Protesting Teachers At TSC Offices Dispersed By Police
Protesting educators expressing their dissatisfaction with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) decision to issue them interdiction notices faced a response from the police, who employed tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
Initially, the teachers believed they were signing transfer requests to relocate from the security-concerned North Eastern region. To their surprise, the TSC served them with interdiction notices, effectively terminating their employment.
In response to their job terminations, the teachers organized a protest march in Upperhill, leading to a confrontation with the police, during which one teacher sustained injuries. The injured police officer was promptly rushed to a hospital, while 10 of the interdicted teachers were apprehended.
Amidst the protest, a police officer expressed his frustration, stating, “You can’t come here to disrupt services. We will take action against you today.”

Despite the police presence and the use of tear gas, the teachers remained determined, refusing to disperse until their concerns were addressed.
The situation has arisen as over 129 teachers from various regions across the country collectively refused to report to their schools in the North Eastern region, citing security concerns and calling for enhanced safety measures or transfers to safer areas.
So far, the TSC has issued interdiction letters to 60 of the 129 teachers as a disciplinary response, citing their actions as detrimental to education in the volatile North Eastern region.
Julius Melly, Chairperson of the National Assembly Education Committee, has urged the TSC to reconsider its decision and reinstate the interdicted teachers. He emphasized the difficulty of teaching when educators’ lives are under threat and the challenge of attending to students in the face of life-threatening situations. The situation underscores the complexities of ensuring education in regions with security challenges.
