TSC Releases Updated Allowances For Teachers.

TSC updates the teachers allowances from time to time. Those teachers who receive promotions enjoy higher allowances.

What normally determines the amount of allowances you receive is your job group. These job groups are given following the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG).

So you should know that the allowances paid to teachers are not uniform. These allowances are not paid separately but alongside your monthly salary.

You should understand that there are a number of factors that determine your allowances. For example;

  • Workstation
  • Job group
  • Responsibilities
  • Type of learners handled

Most allowances are paid every month, but other are off.

Types of allowances Paid by TSC

1. Remunerative Allowances

These allowances they are of two types namely;

  • Automatic
  • Those paid upon application

Under automatic allowances we have;

  1. Medical allowances – this is not paid directly to teachers but its sent directly to the medical provider AoN Minet and another sent to NHIF
  2. House allowance
  3. Hardship allowance
  4. Commuter allowance
  5. Leave allowance

House Allowance 

Firstly, this is paid monthly to all Kenyan teachers using the criteria of your work station and your job grade/group.

Those teachers who have managed higher grades receive higher house Allowance than those in lower grades.

The Salaries And Remuneration Commission (SRC) clusters work stations into four regions which include;

  • Nairobi
  • Major former municipalities i.e KISUMU, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri, Thika, Kisii, Malindi and Kitale.

The teachers who work in Nairobi receive the highest amount of house allowance while those working in reserve and remote areas receive the lowest amount.

Hardship Allowance

Secondly, teachers working in area with insecurity, harsh climatic conditions and high risk are paid the hardship allowances.

There are places that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has mapped for hardship.

The amount payable is not uniform but depends on the job group one is. Those in higher job groups will receive highest than their counterparts in lower grades.

Commuter Allowance

This allowance solely depends on the teacher’s job group and its paid every month alongside the monthly salary.

Leave Allowance

This allowance is paid at the beginning of every year in January together with the January salary.

However, this allowance is also given as per the teacher’s grade where those in high job groups receive high amounts than their counterparts.

Allowances paid on application

There are those allowances that are paid on application, which include;

1. Responsibility Allowance

These allowances are paid to school administrators including heads, deputy heads and senior teachers recognized by TSC.

This is payable to those who are in job group K and above.

2. Special Duty Allowance

Teachers who have been appointed to job group M and below and are deployed in arid and semi arid lands are paid this type of allowances.

3. Readers Allowance

This allowance is paid to teachers who are visually impaired and have Contracted readers whose qualifications are not less than D+ (plus) at KCSE.

However, the commission determines the rates paid from time to time.

Its also called aid or facilitation allowance that is paid at the rate of Sh15,000 per month to the visually impaired and those confined to the wheelchairs as a result of their disability.

4. Interpreters Allowance

This allowance is paid to teachers who are deaf who seek the services of interpreters while on study leave.

5. Special school Allowance

Teachers who are specialists in special needs education receive this type of allowances. These teachers must be deployed to teach in special schools for them to earn this allowance.

6. Transfer Allowance

When the commission initiates a transfer for a teacher from one school to another, the teacher is paid this allowance.

The teacher receives the amount equivalent to the basic salary for one month.

Reimbursement Expenses

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) reimburses teachers some amounts on certain expenses. They include;

1. Traveling expenses

The teacher is reimbursed this expense Incase;

  • The teacher’s interdiction is revoked
  • While travelling to attend an interview
  • Traveling to a station on first posting outside home county
  • Travelling from station on duty outside home county for retirement
  • Also teachers in hardship areas who are traveling to their home during school holidays. For you to receive this among your home county must be outside the hardship area.

In short, for you to receive this amount, you must apply and attach all the necessary documents.

2. Quota Per Diem

Lastly, teachers on official assignments are paid this allowance daily as subsistence. For you to benefit from this allowance, you must make an application 14 days before traveling.

In summary, the above allowances are all payable to teachers are always determined by the commission from time to time.
