Long Con For Retired Teachers As Pension Takes New Twist

Thousands of retired teachers in Kenya are fighting for justice, seeking retirement benefits and pay arrears totaling Sh43.2 billion.

Despite National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u’s allegation that Sh16.08 billion has been disbursed to pay pensioners, retired teachers have denied knowing anything about the money.

Prof Ndung’u stated to the Senate Education Committee that the Treasury had received 23,487 updated claims from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on behalf of retirees.

Representatives of the 52,000 retired teachers, on the other hand, convened a press conference in Nakuru City, disputing the government’s assertions and expressing their displeasure with the situation.

Retirees Criticize False Claims

The retirees’ representatives described the government’s arguments as misleading and a disrespect to the judiciary in a press release issued by Mr Gidraff Kimatta.

They said that the case had been pending in court since 2010, and they accused the Ministry of Education of contesting the data and certain aspects of the verdict.

They also expressed dissatisfaction with the TSC and Pensions Department for failing to comply with court orders to release the monies.

The papers collected, according to Mr Kimatta, the retirees’ lawyer, show that barely 7,000 retired teachers have received their higher pensions.

Even those who have received their dues have been considerably underpaid since the TSC neglected to include retirees in the computation procedure as required by the Court of Appeal’s October 12, 2010 decision.

This lack of involvement has resulted in inconsistencies in the amounts paid to retirees.

The retiring instructors expressed their great sadness over the nearly three-decade-long court battle.

Despite the involvement of many government institutions, compliance with court orders remains elusive.

The retirees expressed their dissatisfaction with the slow progress and failed to fix the matter quickly.
