Legislators Ask TSC To Reinstate Interdicted Teachers
Tinderet Member of Parliament (MP) Julius Melly has expressed his criticism of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for suspending non-local teachers based on accusations of neglecting their responsibilities. These educators were let go because they had requested transfers from North-Eastern Kenya due to security apprehensions.
Melly voiced his disapproval of the TSC’s decision during the inauguration of a new tuition block at Meteitei Adventist Primary School in Meteitei. He contended that it was unfair to terminate teachers when their concerns about security were entirely valid.
Melly is now urging the immediate reinstatement of the suspended teachers by TSC and their transfer, unless the government can assure their safety at their workplaces. He questioned the authority of individuals at the TSC headquarters in Nairobi who make decisions about firing teachers without taking their worries into account.
The MP demonstrated his support for the affected teachers, who have accused the TSC of overstepping its jurisdiction. These teachers have been staging a protest outside the TSC’s headquarters and have called on Parliament to step in, arguing that the employer is jeopardizing the lives of teachers.

Melly further highlighted the challenges faced by the teachers, emphasizing the financial burden of self-protection measures and the difficulties in accessing safe transportation.
The TSC, under Nancy Macharia, justified the suspension of these teachers in letters sent to them, citing a violation of the Teachers Service Commission Act and accusing the teachers of abandoning their duties. These educators have been camped outside the TSC Headquarters for weeks, seeking transfers from the region due to insecurity caused by the threat of Al-Shabaab and hostility from the local community. They maintain that the TSC has not adequately addressed their concerns.
