As school funding is further delayed, the Secretary of Education lashes out at principals.

Ezekiel Machogu, Cabinet Secretary for Education, urged principals on Friday, June 9, to use money granted by parents as school fees instead of complaining about the delay in capitation funds.

The CS, speaking with Citizen TV, questioned why principals were focused on pressuring the government to release funds when they were aware of the procedures that must be followed prior to Treasury releasing the funds.

He also explained why schools have not received the funds despite repeated promises from the CS.

According to the CS, obtaining funds from the Treasury was a time-consuming procedure. Consequently, colleges had to exercise patience.

“We’re distributing the capitation.” “In order to obtain the funds, you must have the pertinent information, which is then sent to the bank to initiate the disbursement process,” he explained.

“The funds should be in the school accounts by no later than Friday, June 10,” stated Machogu.

However, according to Machogu, the school will only receive Ksh24 billion, which is Ksh4 billion less than anticipated.

“Around Ksh2 billion is designated for infrastructure development, and another Ksh2 billion is intended for school feeding programs,” he explained.

The Secretary of State informed the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 7, that all institutions will receive the funds by Friday, June 9.

“The Treasury has assured me that our schools will receive capitation funds by the end of the week,” Machogu stated.

Before Members of Parliament (MPs), the CS also discussed school meal programs and the distribution of sanitary towels to schools.

Machogu also addressed concerns regarding the criteria for instituting Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and constructing classrooms in Bonchari Constituency, Kisii County, in accordance with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Machogu stated, “The ministry has prioritized the construction of integrated resource centers and sanitation facilities in JSS secondary schools across the nation.”

“These centres will be designed as multipurpose facilities that will be used for teaching and learning,” he added.
