‘What property do Gen Zs have to protect?’ : Atwoli Slams Uhuru Kenyatta

Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), has strongly criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta for his recent statement urging young people to fight for their rights.

Atwoli described Kenyatta’s remarks as self-serving and insincere, claiming they were motivated by political interests. He expressed his doubts about the former president’s sincerity in pushing for youth empowerment.

Speaking in Kakamega on Monday, Atwoli questioned Kenyatta’s true intentions, accusing him of using the topic of youth empowerment as a cover to protect his wealth.

He reminded the audience of his suggestion in 2017 to amend the Constitution to establish specific conditions for retired presidents, but he was criticized at the time for allegedly attempting to extend Kenyatta’s term in office.

Now that Kenyatta is no longer in power, Atwoli wondered aloud, “What property do the youth have to protect?” He implied that Kenyatta’s current statements were designed to deflect attention from his financial interests.

Atwoli further claimed that Kenyatta’s call for the youth to stand up for their rights was not a genuine effort to empower them.

Instead, he suggested that it was part of a broader scheme by the former president to safeguard his assets from any possible government action under the current Kenya Kwanza administration.

He argued that the youth, who are mostly struggling without substantial wealth, have no property to protect.

Kenyatta’s remarks about youth empowerment were made during a recent appearance where he encouraged young people to fight against injustice and assert their rights.

While some have praised his message as a motivating call to action, others, including Atwoli, have criticized it as hypocritical, pointing out that Kenyatta did little to address the concerns and challenges faced by the youth during his presidency.
