TSC Updated Allowances Per Job Group.
A collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that was reached in 2016 between the TSC and teachers’ unions raised the basic pay and benefits for teachers.
The housing allowance for teachers was significantly increased by the previous Salaries and Remuneration Commission. Even if an increase in basic salary primarily benefited administrators, this nevertheless happened.
In this blog, we will go through some TSC benefits for each category of employment that teachers can find themselves in. We’ll also examine how the house allowance varies depending on where the teacher works.
TSC TEACHER ALLOWANCES
In Kenya, teachers are eligible for three basic allowances:
- House allowance,
- Commuter allowance and

TSC COMMUTER ALLOWANCE
Each and every TSC employed teacher enjoys a traveling allowance. The rates differ depending on the job group as below stated :
HOUSE ALLOWANCE
There is a housing allowance given to all teachers. The rates for housing subsidies vary from municipality to municipality.
Due to the high cost of renting a home in Nairobi, teachers there earn a bigger housing allowance than in other cities.
The following table details the allowances received by other municipalities.
TSC ANNUAL LEAVE ALLOWANCE
All teachers receive it once a year. Typically, it is paid in January. As seen below, the leave allowance differs according to the employment group.
The new 2022 Annual Leave Allowance for teachers, as outlined in the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), has been paid by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Teachers in grades B5 and C1 will receive the lowest yearly leave payment, Sh4,000, per the 2021–2025 CBA.
The top earner would take home Sh10,000 annually.
