TSC Set To Begin Interviewing and Promotion Of 2,419 Teachers

TSC Promotion Of Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to begin interviewing candidates for the promotion of 2,419 teachers in primary and secondary schools.

The interviews, according to a TSC, would take place at the regional and county levels from November 1 to 12.

The majority of the positions available are for chief principals, principals, deputy principals, headteachers, deputy headteachers, and senior teachers.

The interviews would also result in the promotion of 1,376 teachers to the positions of head and deputy head in hard-to-staff regions and arid and semi-arid lands (Asal).

The promotions are in accordance with the career advancement guidelines, which went into effect in 2018.

Next month, interviews will be held for the 1,995 interns – 1,038 for primary schools and 957 for secondary schools.

Senior Teachers Promotions

Over the last year, TSC promoted over 100,000 teachers in accordance with the 2017-21 collective bargaining agreement (CBA), which expired on June 30.

There are 15,407 teachers among them, who were interviewed in December 2020 and February of this year.

The remaining 99,078 were promoted through the newly established common cadre, while 712 teachers and institutional administrators in ten Asal regions were promoted through affirmative action, according to the commission.

In a single school year, 115,197 classroom teachers, senior teachers, deputy headteachers, headteachers, curriculum developers, deputy principals, and principals were promoted.

The CBA granted all cadres of teachers a common promotion upon serving for three years in the entry grades.

P1 teachers in job group B5 were promoted to job group C1, diploma holders in job group C1 were promoted to job group C2, and degree holders in job group C2 were promoted to job C3.

TSC said The promotions are a departure from the past where P1 teachers entered and retired from service in the same grade and demonstrate the commission’s commitment to supporting teachers’ professional development by providing a clear career path for the worker.

A teacher must have served in their current job group for three years, according to the career progression guidelines.

Senior masters promotions

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia stated that there are vacancies for secondary school teachers, senior masters and deputy principals, primary school teachers, senior teachers, deputy headteachers, and headteachers in dry counties.

The promotion of teachers in the Asal regions is part of the commission’s promise in the 2021-25 collective bargaining agreement.

Teachers in Asal regions who hold the positions have been in acting capacity for more than three years.

Due to insecurity, schools in the regions have been experiencing a severe teacher shortage.

Many teachers assigned to these areas seek a transfer as soon as possible.

A number of teachers are also being transferred from primary to secondary school to handle junior secondary students in preparation for the 2023 rollout.

The TSC intends to extend the terms of 4,005 interns whose one-year contracts were set to expire in December.

This would bring the total number of interns in schools to 6,000.

The 1,995 interns who will be hired starting next week are expected to begin classes in January 2022.

According to the commission, the recruitment of interns is intended to address the teacher shortage in schools.

A monthly stipend of Sh15,000 is paid to a primary school teacher intern, while Sh20,000 is paid to a secondary school teacher intern.
