Police Investigate Theft of Ksh 1.3M School Funds Meant for Teachers’ Trip
Police in Nandi Hills are investigating a robbery that took place on Thursday. The school bursar, Nahashion Lagat, reported that he lost Sh1.3 million outside a commercial bank in town. Lagat had withdrawn the money from a local bank to pay for a teacher’s holiday retreat in Mombasa.
He took the money wrapped in a khaki envelope and dropped it in his car before going to a nearby grocery store. Upon his return, he found the doors of his car wide open and the envelope missing. Police are investigating the incident, and they are analyzing CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspects.
This incident is not the first of its kind in the area. Nandi East DCIO Rahman Wasilwa said that several cases of theft from cars have been reported, including one in which suspects were arrested for stealing from a car in Kapsabet. Police are following leads from previous incidents, in which suspects use a “remote blue tooth” gadget to open motor vehicles fitted with a central locking system.
In another heist at a bank in Kapsabet town, four suspects were arrested a month ago. They were tracked and arrested at Kisumu-Migosi estate with the same vehicle they had used in another robbery. The suspects were released on bail by a Kapsabet court after stealing Sh1 million from a petroleum dealer.
The theft of the money has led to the suspension of a planned Coast town tour for 40 teachers. The DCI is actively investigating the matter.
