Why Some Teachers Reportedly Choose Alcohol Despite Being Public Employees

In Kenya, teaching is one of the most respected professions. Teachers are credited with shaping professions such as medicine, engineering, and law, among others.

Despite their noble profession, teachers are poorly compensated. According to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the minimal starting salary for a primary school teacher is $49.694.

With the introduction of the 1.5% housing fee and other deductions such as Payee, NSSF, and NHIF, teachers have a heavy burden to transport home.

Due to these deductions, teachers are left with insufficient funds to support their families, particularly in these difficult economic times.

According to the Daily Nation, a portion of teachers in unspecified regions of the country have turned to alcohol as a means of coping with tension.

It is extremely humiliating for this esteemed profession that a teacher can publicly choose to use alcohol as a stress reliever, but do they have a choice?
