3% salary deduction rejected by Teachers
The Teachers’Union, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has opposed the President’s 3 percent Salary Deduction towards affordable housing.
The union has warned the Kenya Kwanza Government of moving forward with the plan citing that the teachers are heavily taxed and should not be subjected to further deductions.
The KUPPET deputy secretary general said during the press conference that at its headquarters that they need to act with speed to quash the planned deduction.
The deputy secretary stated that if the government is in a Financial crisis, it should not borrow from teachers.
“If the government is broke, let it not borrow from from teachers,” he said.
This matter will further be discussed this coming weekend in the scheduled KUPPET National Governing Council meeting.
He further said that if the proposed deduction is implemented, it will cripple the teachers who are already crippled and struggling to pay their bills.
Many unions including the Federation of Kenya Employers has come out to oppose this matter strongly saying it will hurt the private sector and even lead to lose of jobs.
The union further stated that the levy will be unnecessary on teachers who at the moment are making huge contributions towards taxes.
The union has urged the government to reconsider its position and seek alternative ways of funding affordable housing.
“We just stop this very early,” said the deputy secretary general.
