Duties and Responsibilities Of Deputy Headteachers.

Primary schools in Kenya have two deputies namely Deputy headteacher II and Deputy Headteacher I who are in job group C4 and C5 respectively.

The deputies in primary schools are answerable to the school headteacher on matter of curriculum implementation, education policies, plans and programs.

In case the headteacher is not present in school, its the responsibility of the deputy headteacher to take charge of the school.

These duties are always set by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and therefore, the work of the deputies is to implement.

Duties and Responsibilities of Deputy Headteacher II and I

1. He/she is mandated with offering guidance and counselling to the teachers, learners and non-teaching staffs for purposes of instilling norms and values that will promote harmonious coexistence.
2. They also maintain discipline of learners, teachers and non-teaching staffs in the school in order to provide conducive environment for learning.
3. They also have a supervisory and implementation roles in ensuring that the curriculum is adhered to by ensuring that the teachers prepare their professional documents.
4. They also coordinate the administration of internal exams in the school and supervise the analysis of the same exam before its released.

6. They are also in charge of sourcing instructional materials, availing them to teachers and learners for proper curriculum implementation.
7. They are also charged with the supervision of the teaching and non-teaching staffs in discharging their tuition duties in the school.
8. They are also in charge of the stores, they requisition the store materials and equipments and maintain a proper record for purposes of utilization and accountability when need arises.
9. They supervise the school activities like ensuring that cleanliness is maintained in the school compound and repairs are also done in time.
10. They are also the secretaries during the board meetings and they keep records for such meetings.
11. They are also required to maintain the learner’s and staff’s records like the register, staff attendance, learners discipline cases and leave management forms.
12. They are also entrusted with appraising the senior teacher and other teachers.
13. They also assist the school head in creating harmonious linkage between the school and the stakeholders i.e the parents, community and other private organizations.
14. They are also charged with ensuring the safety and security of the learners and other institution resources.
15. They also prepare the professional documents and also maintain the academic standards of the school to ensure syllabus coverage is done in good time to give room for proper evaluation.
16. Teach the subjects of specialization to the learners for purposes of imparting knowledge, skills and attitude to them.
17. They also evaluate these learners on their subjects of specialization to ensure that they are molded well for the upcoming national Examinations.
18. They are mandated with coming up with new ideas and programs for purposes of improving teaching and learning in various subjects.
19. They also embrace team spirit among teachers for purposes of improving curriculum delivery.
20. They are also tasked with serving as role models to the learners in order to provide conducive environment for learning.
21. They also initiate the curriculum implementation, development and evaluation process ensure curriculum relevance and ensure its achievable in schools.
22. They are also tasked with the interpretation of the curriculum for effective teaching and learning.
23. They are supposed to organize seminars, symposiums and workshops for idea sharing to further knowledge in learning areas
24. They also identify learners with performance gaps and organize remedial lessons for them.
