Ruto Announces Changes To University, TVETs

President William Ruto has pronounced good news to university and TVET students on new funding model.

While on a tour to Meru, the president said that the government has a plan for double funding for universities and Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVETs) Colleges begining May 2023.

He mentioned that this initiative will see those students with financial constraints benefit more in order to complete their studies.

He mentioned that more information about the new model will be availed the coming week.

“We have determined that the technical colleges and universities are being underfunded. We will double the resources that are going to our Universities and TVETS to eliminate the challenges in our institutions,” Ruto said.

“We will make the announcement next week so that those joining schools in May will have a new and comprehensive model that can not compromise the quality of Education,” he stated.

Furthermore, the president reiterated that the government will increase the number of staffs to address shortages in colleges and universities.

The president mentioned this aying the move would improve the quality of education and acquaint students with the necessary technical skills needed in the job market.

“In the next two months, we have new tutors and in our next budget from June, we will employ 2,000 more TVET teachers,” the president revealed.

The president was prompted to make this statement amidst the cash crunch facing universities and colleges in paying the staffs.

Among those affected are public universities that have recently decided to increase school fees to curb the crisis.

The presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) had backed up the proposition for universities to increase university fees from sh16,000 to Sh48,000 to curb the rising crisis in tertiary institutions.
