Schools in Lamu are at risk of closure as teachers flee Shabaab raids following the murder of five locals
Teachers evacuated the terror-prone areas of Lamu shortly after an al Shabaab attack in the region that left five locals dead, leaving students stranded.
Pamela asserts that more than 40 men in military uniforms arrived at their home, ordered them to lie down, and set it on fire before assaulting a visiting 19-year-old student on a midterm break.
The schools now face imminent closure due to a lack of instructors to instruct the students.
Later, the assailants murdered four more men, including a 60-year-old man they had bound prior to killing.
However, parents have refused to allow their children to attend school out of concern that militants may target educational institutions.
The attack, which was likely carried out by Al-Shabaab militia, has left the community in a state of shock and anguish.
The five terror-prone schools of Basuba, Milimani, Mangai, Mararani, and Kiangwe were compelled to close in 2020 after teachers allegedly fled after receiving death threats from al Shabaab militants.
Regional Commissioner for the Coast Rhoda Onyancha visited the crime scene and pledged that security would be restored and those responsible for the dastardly act would be brought to justice. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the attack’s cause.
The militants vandalized and set fire to some institutions.
Meanwhile, Pamela is struggling to accept the death of her brilliant and promising grandson, whom she describes as a student. She states that Barrack aspired to become a physician and was working diligently to accomplish his goals.
Mid-January of this year, the government reopened all six schools that had been closed for seven years due to terrorist threats.
