The situation concerning teachers in Arid and Semi-Arid Land areas is troubling. They are facing various challenges, including issues related to security, transportation, and transfers. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) needs to promptly address these concerns to ensure the well-being of both teachers and students.

Security and safety should be the top priority in these regions. Many teachers have expressed concerns about their safety, given the lack of security and the high costs of transportation. This has led to a significant number of them seeking transfers to more secure locations.

In meetings with government officials and parliamentary committees, these issues have been brought to light. Luanda MP Dick Maungu questioned how traumatized teachers can effectively serve their students in such circumstances. Mandera South MP Haro Abdul emphasized that the time spent pursuing transfers takes away from the teachers’ ability to educate children, ultimately doing a disservice to the students.

Narok MP Rebecca Tonkei criticized the TSC for holding onto teacher transfers against their wishes, despite a directive from Parliament. However, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia explained that teacher transfers are based on factors like vacancy availability, the need for replacements, staffing norms, and medical grounds. She noted that many teachers originally requested transfers to their home counties, and challenges arise due to the lack of suitable replacements and vacancies.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki mentioned that many teachers had to stay in makeshift or police stations for their safety. He assured that non-local teachers were being moved to safer areas, prioritizing their safety.

Tinderet MP Julius Melly emphasized the need for the government to guarantee teachers’ security, especially as schools were closing and reopening soon. Kindiki proposed transferring non-local teachers after a short period and providing scholarships for local students to take up teaching courses and fill these positions. These discussions highlight the urgency of addressing the challenges faced by teachers in these regions.
