TSC Sets Salary Increment Meeting On Tuesday With KNUT and KUPPET
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recently made a progressive move by opening up a debate with the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) about pay raises for teachers.
On Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi, the much awaited meeting is scheduled to take place. It is expected to address the crucial issue of teacher compensation.
The TSC has extended an invitation to KUPPET and KNUT officials as a show of its willingness to have a candid discussion regarding the issues brought up by the unions. Due to increases in statutory deductions and the implementation of additional taxes like the affordable housing tax, teachers have had difficulties. In order to secure fair and equitable compensation, the unions had previously campaigned for a modification of the non-monetary Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in 2021.
The Secretary General of KNUT, Collins Oyuu, emphasised the crucial part that adequate compensation plays in how well educators function. He claimed that job happiness, which in turn depends on just compensation, is a key factor in a teacher’s ability to be effective. In order to ensure that teachers are adequately compensated for their essential services to society, Oyuu reaffirmed the union’s resolve to carrying on negotiations with the TSC.
Both KUPPET and KNUT have presented their respective requests for pay raises. KUPPET is requesting a 42% wage increase for teachers beginning on July 1 while KNUT is pushing for a 60% pay increase. These ideas are a direct result of the unions’ steadfast commitment to ensuring better living conditions for its members and developing the education industry as a whole.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) announced a 7% to 10% wage increase for teachers and government employees, retroactive to July 1. This announcement came during these discussions. There was optimism following this statement, but there was also considerable scepticism. KNUT raised worries that the difficulties experienced by educators might not be entirely addressed by this increase.
In response, the SRC’s announcement was criticised by KNUT General Secretary Oyuu, who described it as an example of how the government gives while simultaneously takes away. As both KUPPET and KNUT work to strike this delicate balance, the priority remains securing just compensation that fairly represents the duties of educators.
Teachers could benefit greatly if the upcoming meeting yields a satisfactory deal. Beginning on July 1, 2021, the negotiations are intended to review teacher pay and bonuses retroactively. For educators who have steadfastly carried on with their work despite the many difficulties encountered, this potential is surely a ray of hope.

The education industry eagerly awaits the conclusion of these agreements while discussions carry on. With KUPPET, KNUT, and the TSC working together to secure fair and just remuneration for the priceless contributions teachers make to shaping the country’s future, the future of educator salaries is in jeopardy.
The goals of teachers and the government collide in this ongoing story of dialogue and cooperation, with both parties acknowledging the critical relevance of high-quality education and its educators. There is optimism that a resolution will be reached thanks to the dedication shown by all parties concerned, resulting in better working circumstances for teachers and, eventually, a stronger foundation for the country’s youth.
