The Ministry of Education is currently in discussions with the treasury to explore options for forgiving a portion of the Sh. 60 billion debt that public universities owe the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

Recent reports indicate that this financial burden has accumulated over the past five years, largely due to the methods employed by KRA for collecting levies from these educational institutions.

In light of the dire financial situation facing these universities, the ministry has acknowledged that they are unable to settle their outstanding bills. CS Ezekiel Machogu has announced the formation of a committee tasked with addressing these unpaid obligations.

Furthermore, he has emphasized that the proposed new funding model aims to rectify the financial challenges faced by universities. Notably, schools catering to students with special needs will be the initial beneficiaries of this revised funding framework.

This development brings a glimmer of hope to public educational institutions that have been grappling with substantial debts, which, if left unaddressed, could have led to their closure due to insufficient financial resources.
