Pay boom for teachers as SRC Assign New Allowance

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has recently made significant adjustments to the Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) rates, commonly known as travel allowances, applicable to civil servants, including teachers, throughout the nation, specifically for local travel purposes.

The primary objective behind these updated rates is to ensure equitable compensation for the expenses incurred by individuals while on official duty trips. This initiative, as detailed in a circular dated August 7, 2023, and personally signed by SRC Chairperson Lyn Mengich, encompasses all urban centers, county headquarters, and various other towns.

Now, let’s delve into the specific changes within different teacher grade categories:

1. Grade B5 and C1 Teachers: For educators falling under Grade B5 (Primary Teacher II) and C1 (Secondary Teacher III, Lecturer III, Primary Teacher I), the revised DSA has been set at Ksh6,300.

2. Grade C2, C3, C4, and C5 Teachers: Teachers belonging to Grade C2 (Secondary Teacher II, SNE Teacher II-Primary, Lecturer II, Senior Teacher II), C3 (Secondary Teacher I, Lecturer I, SNE Teacher I-Primary, SNE Teacher II-Secondary, Senior Teacher I), C4 (Senior Lecturer IV, Senior Master IV, SNE Senior Teacher – Primary, SNE Teacher I – Secondary, Deputy Headteacher II), and C5 (Senior Master III, Senior Lecturer III, Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher I, Curriculum Support Officer II) will now receive a DSA of Ksh11,200.

3. Grade D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5 Teachers: The upper echelons of educators, including those in Grade D1 (Senior Master II, Deputy Principal III, Senior Headteacher, Senior Lecturer II, Curriculum Support Officer I), D2 (Deputy Principal II, Senior Master I, Senior Lecturer I), D3 (Principal, Deputy Principal I), D4 (Senior Principal), and D5 (Chief Principal), will enjoy an increased DSA of Ksh14,000.

Moreover, it’s essential to note that the SRC’s circular emphatically states that this update supersedes any previous circulars concerning Retreat Allowance, Taskforce Allowance, Sitting Allowance for Institutional Internal Committees, and DSA (Local and Foreign Travel) in the public service.

This comprehensive revision aims to ensure a fair and transparent compensation structure for civil servants, facilitating their work-related travel needs more effectively.
