KUPPET Wants Exam Marking Rate To Be Increased

The Deputy Secretary-General of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Training (KUPPET), Mose Mbura, expressed concerns about the lack of a formal agreement between the union and the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) regarding the utilization of its members for national exams. He emphasized the challenges faced by teachers involved in exam-related work, citing instances where they work extended hours, travel long distances, stay in substandard accommodations, and adhere to strict regulations at exam marking centers.

Mbura pointed out that the KNEC promptly compensates security personnel, while teachers often wait for several months to receive their payment. Additionally, he highlighted disparities in the compensation provided, with less than Sh100 offered for each paper they mark, varying across different subjects.

He urged the KNEC to engage in discussions with the union to address these issues, improve payment procedures, and enhance working conditions before their members would be willing to participate in exam-related tasks. Mbura also encouraged teachers involved in exam marking to collaborate to achieve better remuneration and benefits. He shared an incident from the previous year when some teachers abandoned colleagues who refused to mark CRE papers at St. Francis Mang’u Girls School in Kiambu County.
