KNEC Issues New Guidelines on Items Banned from Exam Rooms

In an effort to curb cheating during this year’s national examinations, the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) released a set of guidelines on Wednesday. As the agency prepares to oversee the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, scheduled to begin on October 30 and October 23, respectively, it issued a statement outlining prohibited items in the examination rooms.

KNEC specified the items that candidates are not allowed to have in the examination rooms, which include wristwatches and programmable calculators. Bags, briefcases, backpacks, and kiondos are also strictly prohibited.

Additionally, electronic devices such as mobile phones, smartwatches, headphones, tablets, body cameras, camera pens, and Bluetooth-capable devices are banned from the exam rooms.

KNEC has implemented stringent guidelines that forbid the use of clothing, footwear, and materials with handwritten notes by exam candidates. The Council also emphasized its commitment to preventing candidates from having any inscriptions on their bodies, except for declared tattoos, which are exempt from the list of prohibited materials.

The Council issued a strong message, urging candidates to maintain their integrity and refrain from sharing exam-related information on social media. KNEC expects candidates to be honest and uphold their integrity throughout the examinations. Candidates are advised to arrive on time for their exams to ensure punctuality and reduce anxiety.

Furthermore, the Council recommended that candidates use their cell phones at home but not during examinations. In closing, KNEC expressed its confidence in diligently preparing and securing the examinations.
