Another incoming recruit completes a medical at Arsenal
Jurrien Timber’s medical to become an Arsenal player was concluded on Friday, and the move is on the verge of being announced.
Fabrizio Romano reported earlier in the week that Jurrien Timber would undergo a medical examination at Arsenal on Friday morning before signing a contract through 2028.
Charles Watts verified around Friday lunchtime that Timber had arrived to complete the move, and that he was meeting his new teammates at London Colney.
Then, on Friday afternoon, Romano verified that Timber had passed his medical examination.
Watts confirmed in a couple of additional updates that Timber is expected to travel to Germany with the team on Sunday, when Arsenal commence their preseason tour.
Watts added that the defender is being signed as a right back despite his ability to play in the middle or at center back.
Previous reports have indicated that Mikel Arteta and Edu believe Timber is capable of functioning as an inverted right-back for Arsenal, playing in midfield when the team is in possession.
Oleksandr Zinchenko played this position on the opposite side last season, but in Zinchenko’s absence due to injury, Arsenal completed the season with Thomas Partey playing the inverted right-back position.
Arsenal reached an agreement with Ajax to sign Timber for a fee of €40 million (£34.3 million) + €5 million (£4.3 million) in bonuses deemed to be “mostly realistic.”
Therefore, the total package could wind up costing slightly less than £39 million, up from Arsenal’s initial offer of £30 million but less than Ajax’s initial valuation of over £50 million.
The 22-year-old made 47 appearances for Ajax during the 2022/23 season, and he also played 15 times for the Dutch national team.
