All Deployed Teachers to JSS Excluded from Retooling Programme
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has made a decision to exclude primary school teachers who were deployed to junior secondary school (JSS) from the upcoming training session set to commence next week. Approximately 7,400 PTE teachers, who met the qualifications for deployment, were assigned to teach grade 7 learners in March.
However, the TSC has stated that only newly recruited JSS teachers will participate in the training scheduled for October 9th to 13th.
A total of 56,000 Grade 7 teachers will embark on training for the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency Based Assessment (CBA) starting on Monday next week. TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia commended teachers who have been actively engaged in ensuring CBC compliance while also managing their regular school responsibilities. She expressed her appreciation during World Teachers’ Day at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi.

In a memo dated September 26th, addressed to TSC Regional and County Directors, the Commission outlined the training focus for teachers in subjects like language, science, mathematics, humanities, and technical subjects. The training will take place in Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and other selected county venues.
The Grade 7 teacher training is scheduled from October 9th to 13th, 2023, while training for Master Trainers and Trainer of Trainers (TOTs) started earlier. Master Trainers from various educational bodies underwent training from October 2nd to 4th at the Kenya Institute of Special Education. These Master Trainers will then go on to train the TOTs, including Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs), Teacher Educators (Tutors), TSC Sub-county directors, and Ministry of Education quality assurance officers. The training for all participants will be conducted face to face.
This training initiative coincides with TSC’s deployment of 18,000 intern teachers to junior secondary schools in late August and early September. Additionally, Grade 7 learners are set to begin their national writing assessment in October, with a wide range of subjects included in the examinations, running from October 2nd to 26th, 2023. These subjects encompass compulsory and optional areas with written exams, such as Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Agriculture, Social Studies, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, CRE/IRE/HRE, Science and Technology, Kenyan Sign Language, Integrated Science, Computer Studies, Business Studies, Life Skills Education, Pre-Technical, and Pre-Career Education.
