Women Urged to Assert Their Rights and Participate in Leadership

Kenyan women have been encouraged to harness their innate strength and resilience to actively champion their constitutional rights, including seeking senior leadership roles in elective positions. This call was made by NARC Kenya leader Martha Karua, Kilifi Deputy Governor Flora Mbetsa Chibule, and Senior Counsel Lilian Mwaura, who urged women to embrace their values, act decisively, and reject any attempts to diminish their worth in society.

The Power of Resilience in Public Affairs

Speaking at the launch of Martha Karua’s memoir, Against the Tide, held at a Malindi hotel, the leaders underscored the ability of women to excel in public affairs, citing the resilience they demonstrate within their families. Karua, a Senior Counsel, reminded women of their inherent capacity to nurture and lead, drawing parallels between family management and public service. She emphasized that women should extend this resilience to nation-building and political participation.

Karua encouraged women to actively pursue elective positions, noting their capability to significantly contribute to societal development. She also urged schoolgirls to prioritize education as a foundation for future participation in nation-building.

Building Confidence and Breaking Barriers

Deputy Governor Chibule reminded women and girls that achieving their aspirations requires confidence, strong character, and determination. She highlighted that fearlessness is essential for success in any field.

Senior Counsel Lilian Mwaura reflected on her personal journey advocating for gender equality, which began over 40 years ago when she recognized that women were marginalized due to a lack of awareness of their rights. She shared her pride in co-founding the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Kenya Chapter, alongside Karua, which has empowered countless women. Mwaura expressed satisfaction seeing women like Chibule in leadership positions, affirming that such milestones validate their efforts.
