What you need to know about the third term school calendar
Students nationwide have commenced their return to school following a two-week break. According to the revised school calendar issued by the Ministry of Education for Pre-primary, Primary, and Secondary schools and colleges, the third term officially began on August 28, 2023, and will continue until October 27, 2023.
During this final term, both primary and secondary school learners are expected to remain in school for a duration of 9 weeks. This term is particularly crucial as it precedes the upcoming national examinations, and therefore, there will be no mid-term break.
Candidates not taking part in the national exams will enjoy their holiday from October 28 until January 8, 2024. Grade Six and Standard Eight candidates will sit for their KPSEA and KCPE exams, respectively, over a four-day period from October 30 to November 2, 2023. This marks the last cohort of KCPE students under the 8-4-4 system, which has been replaced by the 2-6-3-3-3 Competency-Based Curriculum.
The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams are scheduled to commence on November 3 and conclude on November 24, 2023.

Notably, approximately 2.3 million candidates are slated to take this year’s KCPE and KCSE examinations. Among them, 1,415,315 will sit for the KCPE exams, while an additional 903,260 students will take the KCSE papers.
David Njengere, the Chief Executive Officer of KNEC, has confirmed that the examination papers have already been prepared, and candidate registration has been completed nationwide. Examinations will be administered according to the predetermined timetable.
Following the conclusion of the exams, teachers will begin the marking process on November 27, which will continue until December 15, 2023, spanning three weeks.
Additionally, the third term for students in Teachers’ Training Colleges at the diploma level began on May 8 and ended on August 11, 2023.
