The government recently proposed a new funding scheme that will assure students experiencing financial challenges won’t be needed to pay any fees to colleges and universities, including their upkeep, as 2022 KCSE students get ready to enrol in a variety of higher education institutions.

Any student who has not applied for financing before the implementation of this new funding model will be expected to do so through the new site.

It’s important to remember that all current students will continue to receive money according to the government’s current approach, unaffected by this funding scheme.

What you must understand

Students from highly vulnerable and needy homes would receive 100% support, as per President William Ruto’s decree when he introduced the new finance model on May 3, 2023.

The government will cover 93% of the costs for those who are most in need, while the families of those who are less in need will only contribute a pitiful 7%.

Funding is available to all TVET and university students who have received letters of acceptance from TVET and university programmes through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

The government has divided students who are in need of financial assistance into four categories: the vulnerable, the severely needy, the needy, and the less needy. The HELB loan is available to students enrolling at private universities as well, and they are urged to apply.

In order to ensure that students from low-income families receive preference when it comes to scholarship distribution and that students from more affluent households continue to receive loan financing from HELB as in the past, funding across the four categories will be chosen by examining family economic background.

Parents and students are urged to visit www.hef.co.ke, HELB, UFB, or visit Huduma centres for accurate information on the new funding model in order to learn more about it.

Students who need financial aid must submit formal applications online at www.hef.co.ke between August 8 and midnight on September 7, 2023.
