Teachers who are hired by the Teachers Service Commission, which is constitutionally obligated to register teachers, hire teachers, promote teachers, and exercise disciplinary control, are slated to receive significantly higher rewards in the near future.

This comes as a direct result of a decision made by the wages and remuneration commission to Gazzetes the Salary increment for public workers at between 7 and 10 percent.

The move comes at a time when educators are struggling to cope with additional deductions established by the government, such as the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and the Housing Levy.

At this time, a primary teacher in job group B5 earns a basic income of KSH 21,7561 per month. On the other end of the pay scale, a Chief principal of a national school earns a basic salary of KSH 15,7068 per month. Both of these salaries are based on the country’s current cost of living.

If the new compensation plan is fully implemented, then an increase of 10 percent will result in the lowest paid teacher receiving a basic income of KSH 23,921 and the best paid teacher receiving KSH 172,774 at the end of the month.

Nevertheless, in order to contribute to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), which was established at the start of the current fiscal year, teachers will be required to part with close to 360 Kenyan Shillings.

Following the judgement by the court of appeal that reversed a court injunction freezing the finance act, the 1.5 percent housing levy will have its effective date retroactively set to July 1.

The question that must now be answered is whether or not the salary modifications will have any kind of appreciable effect on the teachers’ sense of well-being.

Please note that the TSC has not yet developed a new basic wage schedule that takes into account the additional adjustments suggested by the SRC. This schedule will apply to all teachers across all Cadres.
