varsity, TVET Freshers Funds To Be Released Next Week -CS Machogu
On Wednesday, Machogu announced that 238,714 applications had been submitted. The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) had placed a total of 269,112 students into universities and TVET institutions, making them eligible for government funding. This implies that 3,608 students in universities and 26,790 in TVET institutions who were placed are yet to apply.
In terms of applications, Machogu mentioned that 136,539 students had applied for undergraduate studies, slightly below the expected 140,147. Meanwhile, in TVETs, 102,000 students had applied out of an expected 128,000.
Machogu urged those who have not yet applied to do so before the upcoming deadline.
He emphasized, “University education is accessible to all, and no student should miss the opportunity to join a university due to an inability to pay school fees. We are disbursing the money based on our analysis, which has been shared with the National Treasury.”

This announcement took place during a press conference held at the Ministry’s headquarters, attended by Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura and the Chief Executives of the Universities Fund, KUCCPS, and Higher Education Loans Board – Geoffrey Monari, Mercy Wahome, and Charles Ringera, respectively.
It’s important to note that the new funding model applies only to first-year students, with continuing students expected to continue under the old Differentiated Unit Cost system.
Machogu also mentioned that the number of new entrants is likely to increase after KUCCPS validates data from students who have transferred to different degree programs or universities.
He reassured students, parents, guardians, and higher education institutions that efforts are underway to ensure that loans and scholarships are released to applicants on time to support their learning activities.
