Varsities charging excess fees to be fined, MoU’s revoked

Geoffrey Monari, the chief executive officer of Universities Fund, has cautioned against increasing tuition for students who are supported by the government.

He stated that Universities breaking the agreement would face consequences and their Memorandum of Understanding with them would be withdrawn.

This warning is sent prior to the candidates’ reporting dates to various universities and colleges for the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.

“Based on the costs they charge, universities and us have an agreement in writing. The MOU will be terminated and they will be charged if they raise the fees. Monari remarked.

Furthermore, Monari gave students the assurance that everyone who applied for funding would receive scholarships and loans, and that no student would be left out of funding under the New Funding Model.

He stated that the government would provide loans exclusively to the 9,662 students attending private institutions while providing loans and scholarships to the 130,485 students enrolled in public universities.

Because the number of kids we estimated is greater than the number of students that were placed, he claimed that no student would be left without money.

According to Monari, a student’s loan or scholarship will still be transferred to them if they switch universities or programmes.

According to Monari, all students under the age of 18 will receive scholarships while they wait for loan awards when they become 18, whereas those enrolled in private universities will only receive loans.

Monari disclosed that the Universities Fund seeks to raise the percentage of students enrolling in universities from 19% to 30%.

“We are producing graduates for our global market,” he declared.

President William Ruto presented the New Funding Model in May with the intention of particularly helping students from very low socioeconomic backgrounds.
