Upgraded Teacher Salary Scale in Kenya As Pay Hikes Take Effect
After the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) processed the first payment following the ratification of the agreement on Monday, more details about the agreement have come to light.
Nancy Macharia, the CEO of TSC, has announced that teachers will see an increase in their salaries, ranging from Sh139 to Sh5,141. The new salary structure differentiates between various teaching roles.
Primary School Teachers
Under the new structure, primary school teachers will earn between Ksh. 22,793 and Ksh. 28,491.
Grade C1
Those in job grade C1, including primary, secondary, and lecturing roles, will receive salaries ranging from Ksh. 28,491 to Ksh. 35,614. This category includes Primary Teacher I, Lecturer III, and Secondary Teacher III.
Grade C2
Group C2 teachers, such as Senior Teacher II, Lecturer II, Special Needs Education Teacher II, and Secondary Teacher II, will experience a pay raise ranging from Sh1,666 to Sh3,677. Their salaries will fall between Ksh. 36,621 and Ksh. 45,776.
Grade C3
Teachers and lecturers with grade C3 will earn between Ksh. 44,412 and Ksh. 56,514.
Grade C4
Teachers in job group C4, which includes Senior Lecturer IV, Senior Master IV, Special Needs Education Senior Teacher in Primary and Secondary Schools, and Deputy Head Teacher II, will receive pay raises between Sh2,276 and Sh1,835.
Grade C5
For grade C5, encompassing Senior Master III, Senior Lecturer III, Head Teacher, Assistant Head Teacher I, and Curriculum Support Officer II, pay raises range from Sh139 to Sh2,498. Some teachers in this category will receive a modest raise due to the consolidation of two levels within the same group. Salaries for Grade C5 teachers will be between Ksh. 62,272 and Ksh. 78,667.
Grade D1
Group D1, consisting of Senior Master II, Deputy Principal III, Senior Headteacher, Senior Lecturer II, and Curriculum Support Officer I, will see salary increases ranging from Sh785 to Sh1,693. Deputy Principal II, Senior Master I, and Senior Lecturer I will receive Sh1,078 and Sh1,308, respectively. The salary range for this group is Ksh. 77,840 to Ksh. 95,101.
Grade D2
Those in job grade D2, including deputy principals 2 and senior master 1 teachers, will earn between Ksh. 91,000 and Ksh. 110,000.
Grade D3
Principals and Deputy Principals 1 fall under Grade D3 and will receive raises ranging from 538 to 1,496 shillings.
Grade D4
Senior Principals in Job Group D4 will experience an increase between 282 and 1,690 shillings. Basic salaries for Senior Principals in grade D4 range from Ksh. 118,000 to Ksh. 143,000.
Grade D5
Chief Principals in job group D5 will receive raises of Sh4,367 and Sh1,878, respectively. Their salaries range from Ksh. 131,000 to Ksh. 159,000.
Additional Benefits
Teachers will also benefit from a reevaluation of their allowances, enhancing their overall financial well-being. They will receive the commission’s customary annual raise to offset the rising cost of living.
House Allowance
Instructors will also receive housing allowances, with rural area teachers receiving between Sh3,850 and Sh25,000, an increase from the previous range of Sh3,850 to Sh21,508. Teachers in Nairobi will now receive housing allowances between Sh6,750 and Sh50,000.
This agreement, signed by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (Kusnet), aims to significantly improve the financial circumstances of educators across various job grades.
