According to Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama, the institution must continue to carry out its mission by making strategic interventions that are focused on the needs of individuals.
The senate recently discussed this issue and authorized a number of focused initiatives meant to increase the university’s relevance, vibrancy, and sustainability, according to Kiama.
Speaking during the 67th Graduation, when 85 PhDs were awarded, Kiama said that this will facilitate the creation of standard undergraduate curricula that are in line with regional, national, and international needs.
To shorten the courses, over 250 units were canceled in 2021.

In addition to eliminating more courses from the present 324 offerings, Kiama indicated that the university would strictly hire vital departments and place a greater emphasis on engineering, medical, and IT.

We rationalized programs, promising to concentrate on our flood ship programmes, and we postponed new appointments unless in crucial areas. We have gathered 8.2 billion during this process over the last three years, and we’re still counting,” Kiama said.
According to the professor, cutting down on waste and leaks in its financial systems helped with the reengineering of financial procedures.
He added that despite all efforts to increase relevance, the university’s operating expenses had increased.

”Unfinanced collective bargaining agreements that are made between the employer and the unions and the underfunded Differentiated Unit Cost continue to undermine this financial benefit. Our payroll increased by 1.6 billion as a result of the most recent CBA in the fiscal year 2022–2023,” he claimed.
The decision to safeguard its sustainability was made, according to a memo from the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor DVC Academic Affairs Prof. Julius Okeng’o dated September 19, 2022.
The statement said, “By a copy of this memo, the Director of Information and Communication Technology is required to completely withdraw them from the system.”
Kiama pleaded for the government to back the university’s initiative and provide it the funding it needs to fulfill its obligations to the nation.
According to him, on June 30, 2022, the university of Nairobi foundation was established as a special purpose vehicle to raise private funding and philanthropic donations for the university.

Amb. Simon Nabukwesi, PS for University Education and Research, advised colleges to offer courses that are pertinent to the labor market.
According to Nabukwesi, “We want to support sustainability and we wish that the universities improve and even profoundly compete with the best of the universities globally.”

He urged colleges to find internal solutions to ensure their financial stability.
Universities collaborate with foreign partners on a worldwide scale, and these universities are able to secure sizable research grants that support their delivery of both teaching and research.
Nabukwesi praised UoN for taking the initiative in developing domestically motivated solutions to address the difficulties.
“I am pleased that UoN is leading the way in utilizing internal solutions for financial sustainability. If we want to generate graduates who are skilled, the new paradigm shift in higher education is not an option,” stated Nabukwesi.
According to Prof. Kiama, the university made the decision to explore for answers since it was in actual danger of losing its reputation.

We discovered a blazing house, extinguished the fire, but regrettably, there are still hazardous ambers. We cannot afford to relax while seated. We must stay vigilant since the fire can reappear again with significant features, said Prof. Kiama.
According to Kiama, the doctor’s allowances were increased in 2020–2021 despite there being insufficient funds to continue paying them. The university capitation was decreased.
Nabukwesi recognized the problem and said that the government had released the financial strain that universities were experiencing.
The higher education sector has continued to face resource constraints, which the administration is aware of. Together with all vice chancellors from public universities, we have been in Mombasa to strategize on this subject,” he said.
He assured them that the ministry is prepared to have talks with the new administration and all interested parties in order to find long-term solutions for universities.
