Updated ECDE Teachers Salary in Kenya Per County

The remuneration information for educators and carers working in the field of early childhood development and education (ECDE) has been clarified by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

In Nairobi (Cluster 1), the minimum pay for ECDE instructors should be between Ksh 14,961 and Ksh 15,842, whereas in other places (Cluster 4), it should be between Ksh 13,211 and Ksh 14,092.

This suggestion takes into account the pay bills of county governments’ affordability and long-term survival.

The reports that assert ECDE educators’ pay is below the legally required minimum wage are false, claims SRC. Instead of using the instructors’ gross salaries as the basis for these reports, we used their basic income.

In spite of the remuneration and Remuneration Commission’s call for a pay drop, the Ministry of Education is pushing for higher remuneration for Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) instructors.

In response to a request from county governments, the SRC published an explanation of the pay and benefits of ECDE teachers on January 13, 2023.

This action is a part of the third pay review cycle, and the SRC is currently reviewing the salaries of all public employees, including ECDE teachers. Results are anticipated in June 2023.

However, Dr. Belio Kipsang, the Permanent Secretary for Basic Education, emphasised the critical function that ECDE teachers do at the pre-primary level and asked the Senate committee to engage with the SRC for higher compensation for these teachers.

In order to remove differences in pay scales between permanent and contract-based teachers, Dr. Kipsang encouraged the government to harmonise and establish one scheme of service for ECDE instructors throughout all counties. He believes that quality ECDE can cut the cost of education by 15%.

“The work done by ECDE teachers cannot be compared to the other levels of education as they are the first to interact and induct every child into the school life journey,” the man stated.

The Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) was established under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution with two main duties. First and foremost, it is in charge of setting and evaluating the compensation for all State officers.

Second, it gives national and local governments guidance on the compensation and benefits for other public servants.

Anyone interested in learning more about this subject or contacting the SRC can do so by visiting the organization’s website, www.src.go.ke, sending an email to ammwangi@src.go.ke, or calling (+254 739 579 176).
