Professor Stephen Kiama, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, has returned to work after only a month of his scheduled six-month sabbatical. He announced his return on a social media platform, expressing that he was well-rested and ready to resume his duties.

In his return, he addressed the university community in a video on YouTube, discussing the future direction of the institution and providing important information regarding the 2023-2024 academic year.

New students were informed to report to their respective campuses and faculties on September 25, 2023, while continuing students would begin their first semester classes on October 9, 2023.

Kiama also extended congratulations to the incoming group of students, emphasizing that they had chosen a top-notch institution for their education. He announced that the upcoming graduation ceremony would be held in person, departing from the virtual celebrations necessitated by the pandemic.

Kiama’s sabbatical, initially planned until the end of January 2024, started on August 1. During his absence, Professor Julius Ogengo served as the acting Vice Chancellor.

Kiama had taken this leave because he hadn’t used his accumulated leave days for a considerable time.

It’s worth noting that Professor Kiama assumed the role of University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor in January 2020, with a five-year term that is set to conclude in 2025.
