University Students to Register for Essay Writing Competition
Students from various universities in Kenya are gearing up to participate in an essay writing competition aimed at promoting greater understanding and involvement of youth in climate action, energy transition, and sustainability discussions.
This initiative follows the Africa Climate Summit 2023 held in Kenya, which ended on an optimistic note with President William Ruto emphasizing Africa’s role in decarbonizing the global economy and the importance of youth engagement in climate action.
The competition, organized by Asharami Synergy Kenya in collaboration with scholars from Kenyan universities, has attracted 225 university students from across the country. Debola Adesanya, the Country Manager at Asharami Synergy Kenya, highlighted the significance of international investments in driving a green energy revolution in Kenya and praised the president’s leadership in climate action.
The heart of this initiative lies in a creative writing competition designed to make the complex themes of energy transition and sustainability more accessible to young Kenyans. Distinguished Kenyan scholars are currently assessing the entries.
Adesanya noted that the competition has already showcased the creativity and passion of young Kenyans, offering the promise of shaping a more sustainable future not only for Kenya but for the entire African continent. Participating universities include Jomo Kenyatta University, the University of Nairobi, Kabarak University, Kenyatta University, Kisii University, Maseno University, University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, Technical University of Kenya, Strathmore University, Murang’a University of Technology, Africa Nazarene University, and Machakos University.

Lavinah Gonah, Operations Supervisor at Asharami Synergy Kenya, who is coordinating the competition, praised the high level of engagement and dedication demonstrated by Kenyan youth in climate discussions. She emphasized that their passion and creativity are instrumental in driving meaningful change.
The competition will recognize excellence by awarding cash prizes to the top three winners, and all outstanding entries will be published and shared on global platforms to amplify the voices of Kenyan youth. This dissemination aims to further enhance their engagement in energy transition and the pursuit of a sustainable future in Africa.
As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, initiatives like Asharami Synergy’s essay competition serve as beacons of hope by empowering and engaging youth, taking steps toward a greener, more sustainable, and inclusive future.
The panel of judges for the competition includes distinguished individuals such as Omondi Oketch, Ph.D., Rosemary Nyaole, Ph.D., John Obiero, Ph.D., Hilary Masaya, Ph.D., Abraham Kipkemboi, Ph.D., Victor Boiyo, Ph.D., CS-K, and Kimingichi Wabende, Ph.D., who bring expertise from various academic fields and institutions.
