University students have nine days to apply for HELB

According to John Oluoch, CEO of Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS), students have nine days to apply for loans from the High Education Loans Board (HELB).

The HELB application deadline for students admitted to institutions is August 27, according to Mr. Oluoch.

Before August 27, students who have been admitted to a university must apply for a loan from HELB. Oluoch stated that those who don’t apply won’t be taken into account later.

According to him, all students who took the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) between 2000 and 2022 are eligible for technical college placement and can apply for whatever degree they like.

Oluoch assured the more than 300 principals of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) centres in Mombasa that no student would face prejudice because of the year they took the KCSE exam.

The government’s policy for TVET institutions to allow students who took the KCSE more than 20 years ago had aroused concerns among the principals.

“You should just assist them to join the college as that was their right,” Oluoch stated. “Since KUCCPS had placed the student in the institution who are also qualified for HELB.”

Oluoch stated that because universities had a deadline for the kids to enrol, KUUPs should place KCSE graduates in those institutions.

He suggested that pupils who didn’t get placed in the most recent circle wait for the next one. He stated that a date has not yet been set for the opening of the placement portal.

The head of KUCCPS gave the principals advice to encourage students who had come to the school for any subject to enrol by paying the Sh1,500 application fee.

When the portal is opened, he said, the applicants must pay the cash that KUUPs used to facilitate their placement.

Oluoch made this statement in response to certain principals’ complaints that a large number of applicants were simply walking in for admission rather than using KUCCPS.

According to him, if such students wished to be taken into account for a government education loan, they had no alternative but to go via KUCCPS to help them get into the system and be eligible for the loan.

It was decided during the workshop that each school should ensure the transition to more practical industries, which should be the focus of the students’ training.
