University Students To Stage Demos Over helb Delay
University students have recently expressed their concerns about the delayed disbursement of funds from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB). This delay has had a significant impact, particularly on first-year students who have recently enrolled in higher education institutions, especially those residing on campus.
Comrades at Kisii University, led by Raphael, have voiced their dissatisfaction with the situation. They claim that the Department of Finance had promised to provide financial support since their admission, but as of now, they have not received the promised funds. Raphael stated, “Since we enrolled in this institution, we were assured that the government would support us through HELB loans to help cover our fees. However, we have not received the funds, nor have we seen any signs of disbursement.”

Similarly, a student from Busia named Sylvanus reported facing similar challenges. He mentioned that, upon his enrollment, his parents were compelled to pay some school fees due to the categorization of students.
In addition to these concerns, Peter Odhiambo, a student leader at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, has issued a warning to the government. He stated that if funds are not disbursed by the upcoming Monday, students are prepared to strike in protest against the delayed disbursement of money.
