University of Nairobi staff to experience salary delays.
The University of Nairobi has informed its over 8,000 staff members through letter that their salaries for the month of July will be delayed.
Julius Ogeng’o, acting Vice Chancellor of the University, explained the delay on what he refers to as ‘circumstances beyond their control’ in a memo that was distributed inside the university on August 3, 2023.

“We are writing this letter to extend our sincere apologies to our esteemed staff for the delay in the payment of salaries for the month of July 2023,” the letter reads. This was the result of events that were outside of our control. According to what the letter says, “we are working towards resolving this matter expeditiously so that your salaries are paid soon.” “As a caring organisation, we are working towards resolving this matter expeditiously.”
There are currently 5,525 administrative and technical staff members in addition to 2,220 academic staff members who hold PhDs, 450 professors, and the total employee population at the University of Nairobi is 2,220.
On August 1, 2023, Ogeng’o assumed the responsibilities of the Vice President of the Company, Stephen Kiama, while Kiama was away on leave for a period of six months.
The University Academic Staff Union voiced their concern about delayed salaries throughout the month of March. This concern was directed towards all public universities.
Constance Wasonga, the Secretary General of the Union, stated that the majority of institutions have not paid the salary owed to the academic staff members for the month of February. He warned that the university workers will go on strike should the delay continue.
