University & College Students to Receive up to Sh60,000 HELB

The Ministry of Education has announced that the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans for TVET and university students will be disbursed on Tuesday, November 7. This decision follows student demonstrations over delayed disbursements.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu revealed that the processing of loans for first-year university students and TVET students under the new Higher Education Funding Model has been completed by HELB. He stated, “The Ministry has conveyed to the successful applicants that the funds would commence disbursement to their respective universities and student accounts starting on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.”

The revised financing formula, which eliminates the classification of students as vulnerable or needy, requires parents to contribute a specific proportion of the students’ fees based on the financial strength of their households.

The delayed disbursements had led to protests by students from various educational institutions. Some students had even organized demonstrations in an attempt to expedite the release of the funds.

The revised funding scheme classifies students into five bands with varying scholarship and loan assistance percentages, along with financial support for living expenses. Parents are also required to contribute towards the costs according to their income band.

This development is expected to relieve both institutions and students, as they had been facing financial challenges due to the delayed disbursements.

It’s important to verify the accuracy of bank information for students who applied for loans through the Higher Education Financing Portal, as advised by the Education Cabinet Secretary. The release of funds will provide much-needed support for economically disadvantaged students who rely on HELB loans for essential expenses like housing and sustenance.
