Underage Students To Receive HELB Loans In One Condition

Under one condition, HELB Loans will be made available to minor students who do not yet have national identification cards (IDs).

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has clarified the terms under which government funding will be provided to students who enrol in universities.

2000 of the 2022 KCSE candidates who are enrolling in higher education institutions and who have sought for loans and scholarships have not yet received IDs, it has been noticed. They are under the age of 18.

Such students will not receive government assistance until they submit their identification cards, according to Charles Ringera, the Chief Executive of the HELB.

He continued by saying that their money would be held back until they obtained and showed the board their IDs. During the application process, all students applying for HELB Loans must provide both their own identification number and their parent’s identification number.

Ringera claims that it is unlawful for the board to loan money to pupils who are under the age of 18.

He emphasised that having a national identification card is crucial for proving who a student is, particularly when it comes time to return a loan.

Ringera counselled other students to apply for funding from publicly announced funds.

He emphasised that the new funding model had been established at the right time and that every student would receive monies to continue their study in higher learning institutions as additional support for it.

The chief executive officer of HELB also made it clear that the funding designated for students who altered their courses or universities would still be available.

The focus of the new funding scheme is the students.

The new funding model will support the over 285,698 students who are anticipated to enrol in various colleges and universities in September. He disproved the claim that the new model will exclude some students.

The benefit of the new funding model, according to Ringera, is that students will receive monies according to their need in the following categories: least in need, most vulnerable, most in need, and needy.
