TVET Trainers Retooled to Enhance Implementation of CBET
Principal Secretary State Department for Technical, Vocational Education and Training, Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, is optimistic about the ongoing retooling of TVET trainers by the Kenya School of TVET, as it is expected to support the implementation of competency-based education training (CBET) in TVET institutions.
During a consultative meeting of TVET Principals, Council, and Board Chair at the Kenya School of TVET, PS Muoria announced that 924 TVET trainers from national polytechnics have already undergone retraining, and an additional 580 TVET trainers are currently undergoing retraining across various regions of Kenya. This concerted effort in retooling trainers is seen as a significant opportunity to strengthen CBET implementation in TVET institutions nationwide.
Dr. Muoria emphasized the importance of equipping trainers with the necessary skills and competencies for effective CBET delivery. She highlighted that CBET implementation in Kenya is a presidential directive, and she called upon all TVET agencies, including TVET CDACC, TVETA, KNQA, and Kenya School of TVET, as well as stakeholders in the TVET subsector, to support the implementation of the CBET curriculum in Kenya.
The PS stressed the urgency of ensuring TVET trainers acquire practical skills, which are integral to the successful implementation of CBET, as they provide opportunities for retraining on the use of advanced equipment. She also mentioned that the State Department for TVET will soon initiate a comprehensive program to train trainers in the use of training equipment.
Furthermore, the collaboration between SDTVET and its development partners will lead to the upskilling of TVET instructors in the utilization of cutting-edge apparatus.
Dr. Muoria highlighted that SDTVET has partnered with state departments responsible for Housing and Urban Development, Industrialization, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the implementation of the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) and County Aggregation Industrial Parks (CAIPS). This collaboration will serve as a training ground for TVET trainees and an RPL assessment center for MSMEs.
