TVET Colleges To Smile as Long-awaited Funds Arrive
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges have finally received capitation funds from the government. Several Chief Principals and Principals in the North Rift and Lake Region have confirmed the receipt of these funds.
However, there are concerns because the government disbursed Ksh3,500 per student, which is only half of the expected Ksh7,500 that these institutions usually receive.
This shortfall in funds means that TVET institutions will continue to face challenges in accommodating and providing for new students who have been enrolling. The Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) Lake Region Chairperson, Daniel Randa, mentioned that while some institutions have received the funds, others are still awaiting them.
Typically, these funds are disbursed in stages, so patience is requested from the affected colleges.
Many TVETs have been struggling with tight budgets over the past year, leading to delayed payments to workers and reliance on suppliers, as well as the suspension of co-curricular activities. TVET PS Esther Muoria has provided some hope by announcing that the remaining funds will be released soon during a meeting with TVET heads in Kisumu.
