TTC Intake 2023 For DPTE, DECTE Reporting Date And Fee

There were 11,359 openings for Diploma Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and 2,081 for Diploma Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE) in training colleges (TTCs) as of July 2023, according to the Kenya Universities and Coleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS).

Those who applied eagerly anticipate their reporting date in September so they can begin their teacher preparation courses.

Candidates who took the KCSE exams from 2020 to 2022 may now apply online thanks to a site developed by KUCCPS.

For both DPTE and DECTE courses, the TTC admission grade was altered. To apply, all that was needed was a mean grade of C (plain) and Ksh 1,500, which was to be paid to KUCCPS via Mpesa.

On the KUCCPS portal, the application deadline was set to July 28, 2023. For public colleges, the current fee schedule ranges from 72,000 to 76,000 sh per year.

The teaching programme will be completed in three years. It also involves a practicum that lasts for an entire academic term.

Previously, a student needed to obtain an overall grade of C with a C in each of the cluster areas of math, English, and kiswahili as well as a C in a science and humanities course to qualify for teacher training.

With the new requirements, a student must have a C (plain) average overall with no clusters in maths, English, or Kiswahili. However, a student needs to have a C plain and a C plus in two subjects in order to train as a secondary school teacher.

According to the PWPER’s (Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms) recommendations, this is the case.

The Ministry of Education was requested by the Kenya Teachers Colleges Principals’ Association (KTCPA) to send circulars to TTCs allowing them to accept the amended entry requirements.

“The updated admission standards are crucial for the nation since, for instance, a teacher must be proficient in the subject matter of their area of specialisation, necessitating a better grade in that subject. At first, the subject grade was still a C plus. But the average grade has dropped from a C plus to a C plain,” stated KTCPA Chairman Paul Barasa.

According to Mr. Barasa, the competency-based teacher education plan has been embraced by all TTCs.

“In the primary teacher training colleges, we have the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education, Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education, and Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education. I can confirm that all the private and public TTCs have started these programmes, which are up and running,” he continued.

Kenya has a total of 35 public and 28 private TTCs that offer ECDE, a diploma in primary and secondary teacher education, and other programmes.

Education stakeholders claimed that the new admission standards will assist TTCs who are having trouble filling their programmes with pre-service teachers. Less than 20 students are enrolled in some TTCs.

Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, listed the issues TTCs face as being insufficient budgetary allocations, parents who pay tuition late, and low enrollment.

The CS expressed optimism that the increased number of pre-service teachers will result from the updated TTC admission standards.

“However, maintaining the standard of learning will provide additional obstacles. The PWPER task force recommended that the ministry create rules for a one-year retooling and upgrading programme for teachers who graduated before 2023, the CS said, adding that his ministry has already begun developing implementation plans for the task force’s recommendations.

The CS challenged teacher educators to develop well-trained teachers who can successfully apply the competency-based curriculum in schools while speaking at the annual meeting of principals of public and private teacher training institutes at the Voyager Hotel in Mombasa.
