The Teachers Service Commission is the only commission in Kenya charged with appointing teachers. A graduate teacher starts at job group K, now known as C2, when they are hired by TSC.

The teacher, also known as Secondary Instructor II, is employed to instruct in secondary schools.

According to the TSC terms and conditions of employment, a teacher is put on probation following hiring for a total of six months.

However, if the commission is unhappy with the performance of the recruit, it has the power to extend the probationary period.

The commission will now confirm the teacher with permanent and pensionable terms following the trial period. This educator will receive a monthly salary and be eligible for retirement benefits.

Teachers are entitled to a number of allowances, which are included on their payslips, in addition to their monthly wage. The typical payslip for a graduate teacher looks like this;

  • Housing allowance Ksh7,500
  • Variable medical allowance.
  • Commuter Allowance Ksh5,000
  • Various hardship payments are made.
  • Varying leave allowances

Each of the aforementioned allowances is automatically granted. However, some advantages are location-specific for teachers. It should be noted that teachers receive a variety of allowances depending on their categorization as employees.

ADDITIONAL PERKS THAT MAY BE PROVIDED TO TEACHERS

Instructors are eligible to apply for a number of different allowances in addition to the ones already mentioned. These allowances are provided upon request.

The allowances are listed as follows;

  • Responsibility compensation
  •  Additional duty pay
  •  Reader’s allowance, Interpreter’s allowance, and Transfer’s allowance

However, the amounts paid for these allowances vary. The compensation varies depending on the job group, with higher job group instructors earning more money than lower job group teachers.

SUBSTRATES REMOVED FROM THE PAYSLIP

Some of the deductions from a teacher’s payslip include the following:

~PAYE

~NSSF

~NHIF among others

After all deductions are made, the typical pay stub will have roughly 38000 Kenyan shillings remaining.

UPGRADE FROM C2 TO C3

Following three years in work group C2, the instructor is automatically promoted to job group C3.

It is critical to remember that monthly payments would have been taken out if a HELB loan had been approved.
