Teachers Service Commission has revealed a new policy that will govern the hiring of school heads. Through a statement by TSC boss, Dr. Nancy Macharia noted that the commission’s new policy would ensure principals and deputies of mixed schools are not of the same gender.
She said that the policy is aimed at promoting inclusivity in the teaching workforce. There have been claims of rampant gender disparity in the management of public schools across the country.
In February, reports emerged that the Ministry of Education was on a mission to strip school heads off the supervisory powers. The Ministry was to achieve this by amending the Basic Education Act to redefine the meaning of the word ‘manager’.
The plan which is still on course, if passed, the ministry would have to employ new sets of administrators who would take over the management of the institutions from the principals.
Reports indicate that TSC in its part is also targeting to take over the management of heavy budgets that are expended to more than 30,000 school heads. Further TSC is seeking to take charge of teachers who manage infrastructure and the safety of learners in school.
