TSC to Promote 41,000 teachers This Year

President William Ruto has declared that 41,000 educators will be elevated in recognition of their teaching excellence and to motivate their dedicated efforts.

During the Winner’s State of the Kenya Music Festival on Wednesday, the president announced that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will directly promote 5,000 teachers and indirectly promote 36,000 teachers.

These educators can anticipate improved compensation and benefits, with Ruto underscoring the collaborative partnership between them and the TSC to inspire exceptional teaching.

He stressed the commitment to elevating teachers based on their performance, ensuring that those who demonstrate outstanding skills receive acknowledgment and progression.

In the current year, 5,000 teachers will experience direct promotions, while an additional 36,000 will witness indirect promotions.

As per the president’s disclosure, the government has allocated Sh1 billion to TSC to facilitate this advancement.

“We have allocated one billion shillings for this purpose,” he affirmed.

Ruto has also urged TSC, Teachers Unions, and other stakeholders to expedite negotiations and reach a resolution.

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) recently unveiled a salary increase of seven to ten percent for civil servants over two years.

However, Akello Misori, the Secretary General of KUPPET, indicated their intention to reject this proposal.

Misori emphasized that the main points of discussion would encompass a 70% increase in basic compensation, promotions, medical benefits, and a pension plan.

He clarified that the primary aim was to address the stalled negotiations of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Misori explicitly mentioned that they didn’t intend to introduce new proposals, as the salary discussions were already underway.

TSC, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) all endorsed the agreement.

Misori urged for a reconsideration of instructor salaries before increasing the salaries of state officers.
