Kenya’s total budget has seen an increase of Sh187 billion, bringing it to a total of Sh3.93 trillion. The Ministry of Education has been allocated an additional Sh62.1 billion for various purposes:
1. Sh29 billion for scholarships for first-year university students.
2. Sh20 billion for hiring new teachers by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
3. Sh4 billion for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
4. Sh4.5 billion for junior schools.
However, this budget update includes cuts in various areas, with a significant reduction in development spending by Sh42 billion. Road construction spending has been particularly impacted, with a Sh21 billion cut, and affordable housing’s budget reduced by Sh13 billion.

Other notable changes include:
– A reduction of Sh18.5 billion in the National Treasury’s spending.
– A Sh5.4 billion cut in the allocation for the State Department for Medical Services.
– An increase of Sh145.5 billion in the Consolidated Fund Services (CFS), which includes expenses like pensions, salaries for state officers, and commissions, with a significant portion likely going toward servicing Kenya’s debt.
– An increase of Sh83.75 billion in recurrent expenditure, which covers items such as wages and administrative expenses.
Additionally, there have been allocations for specific programs and subsidies:
– Sh14 billion added for the fertilizer subsidy program and stocking the national food reserve.
– Sh4 billion added for advance payment to coffee farmers, with coffee farmers set to receive Sh80 per kilo of cherry, up from the current Sh20.
– Sh3.5 billion added to pay oil marketers, as the government owes Sh46 billion to oil marketers for fuel subsidy.
