Teachers Pension Processing Moved to TSC
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is advocating for a transition of teachers’ retirement benefits from the Treasury to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu conveyed their concern during an event at Kitui Teachers Training College, emphasizing the frustration experienced by teachers due to delays and corruption in the current payment system managed by the Director of Pensions.
Oyuu highlighted the irony in the process, mentioning that after 35 years of service, where teachers are paid by TSC, upon retirement, they are directed to the National Treasury, an entity unfamiliar with the individual teacher. The union has presented a proposal to rectify this and sought Parliament’s assistance to address the issue.
TSC’s CEO, Dr. Nancy Macharia, had previously blamed the National Treasury for pension payment delays, explaining that the Commission ensures timely paperwork completion and forwards it to the Director of Pensions. However, during a Senate committee meeting, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu implied a shorter processing time for pensions, urging TSC to expedite the process.

The confusion surrounding the pension scheme was further emphasized by Oyuu, who called for clarity on matters related to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Provident Fund, and the Contributory Pension Scheme. He also opposed the ‘backdoor’ delocalization of teachers and demanded fair treatment of educators by various entities like the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).

Oyuu expressed support for the Education Reforms initiatives while asserting KNUT’s jurisdiction over teachers in the Comprehensive School and warned other unions to respect their territory.
This initiative has gained traction amidst the challenges faced by teachers and discrepancies in the pension system, urging for a reevaluation and smoother process to secure teachers’ retirement benefits.
