Good News to Unemployed Teachers following TSC Lion Share Allocation

The Kenya Kwanza government has increased the Teachers Service Commission‘s (TSC) part of the Education docket budget.

TSC has been allotted Sh316.7 billion in the 2023-24 Budget, which is half of the total amount allocated to the education sector of Sh628.6 billion.

TSC has also been given 4.8 billion to recruit 20,000 intern teachers.

TSC received Sh2.5 billion last year for teacher recruitment.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia stated that the commission needs Sh2.2 billion to promote teachers in various job categories.

However, the government has set aside 1.1 billion dollars for teacher advancement.

She went on to say that the commission wants Sh2.1 billion to fund teacher professional development.

Macharia stated in presentations to the National Assembly’s Committee on Education and Research that recruiting will ensure the objectives specified in the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda are met.

“These teachers are expected to reduce the teacher shortage in our public schools, but more importantly, to ensure that learners receive quality education,” Macharia explained.

She believes that simply recruiting interns will have a lot of unintended consequences.

“For starters, it will provide jobs for the many young people who are currently unemployed.” Second, she stated, “improve the quality of education while also raising the living standards of many households across the country.”
