TSC Starting Salary for All P1 Teachers
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) hires both secondary school and primary school teachers, including P1 teachers, throughout the country. P1 teachers begin at job group B5 with a starting salary of Ksh. 21,197.
Additionally, the commission provides various allowances to these teachers, which may vary depending on the location of the school. P1 teachers working in municipalities generally receive higher house and commuter allowances compared to those in rural areas.
According to TSC data, there are over 30,000 P1 teachers in job group B5 who are eagerly anticipating salary increases, as they feel they have been overlooked in terms of promotions for a considerable period.
Job group B5 comprises primary school teachers who are primarily P1 teachers and has six different salary levels. While commuter and house allowances are consistent across all levels, the basic salary differs among the levels.
Teachers working in hardship zones are eligible for a hardship allowance, which amounts to Ksh. 6,600 per month for B5 teachers in such areas.
Teachers with physical disabilities receive higher salaries than their counterparts in the same grade, and they also receive a guide allowance of Ksh. 20,000 per month.

Recently, the teachers’ employer has expressed strong support for these educators. TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia, during her appearance before the Parliamentary committee on budget allocation, acknowledged that teachers have long been neglected in terms of salary increases.
It was further pledged that the salaries of these teachers would be reviewed, resulting in changes to their pay slips.
