TSC Start Replacing Fired Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced on Monday that they have initiated the process of replacing 2,000 teachers who were interdicted for requesting transfers from North Eastern. TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia made this announcement in Mombasa while the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams were beginning. The new teachers will be deployed to Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa counties.

The need for this recruitment arose because non-local teachers had been refusing to report to their workstations in North Eastern, citing security concerns. To prevent a recurrence of this situation, the commission is specifically focusing on qualified teachers from North Eastern. Macharia encouraged Northern Kenya teachers to obtain a form from a County Education Director and start teaching.

Macharia clarified that this teacher recruitment process was only open for North Eastern, though local teachers would be given preference. Qualified teachers from other regions are also welcome to apply. She pointed out a shortage of qualified personnel, particularly in the areas of Physics and Islamic Religious Education.

Macharia emphasized that the interdicted teachers who had received suspension letters had abandoned their duties and remained suspended. The commission is currently investigating the reasons behind these teachers’ requests for transfers from North Eastern and assured that due process would be followed in handling their cases.

On October 16, the interdicted teachers staged a mass protest at TSC headquarters in Upperhill, Nairobi, during which they were dispersed by the police while demanding an audience with top TSC officials, including CEO Macharia.
