TSC sets 5 year limit to Employ 111,870 Teachers
To fill staffing vacancies in public schools, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has established a five-year recruitment objective that will result in the listing of an additional 111,870 teachers.
TSC CEO Nancy Macharia said the recruitment will build on the momentum generated by President William Ruto’s government under the 2022–2023 Financial Year during the 2023–2027 Strategic Plan introduction on Thursday.
She said that as part of the steps to alleviate the current teacher shortage, the new Kenya Kwanza Administration provided the country a shot in the arm by permitting the recruitment of 30,000 teachers in the most recent fiscal year (2022–2023).
Macharia stated that TSC will list 20,000 intern instructors, but he did not specify how many teachers the commission planned to hire for the 2023–24 fiscal year.
She mentioned that TSC has been given Sh4.7 billion for the 2023–24 fiscal year in order to hire 20,000 intern teachers in order to supplement the current staffing levels in public schools.
“The Commission will need an additional budget of Sh134.5 billion for the successful implementation of this Plan over the next five years,” she said.

Kenya’s teacher-to-student ratio, which is roughly 1:40, is severely overcrowded in urban areas and unofficial settlements.
For primary schools, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) suggests a student-teacher ratio of 25.
